3D — Worlds Apart, Week 2

Diorama Concept Art

Learning from my previous 2D unit, I used gradient maps to apply colour on top of the gray scale sketch. Now with the concept art coloured, it is more clear to see that the portal is corrupting and stretching it’s surrounding. This is intentional as I want to deliver the message of the playground (the childhood memory) slowly being consumed by the portal.

Furthermore, I included floating fences and balls from the ball pit to highlight the dreamy theme. This creates the impression that time had stopped working properly. This chaos was also intended to represent how the mind could alter pictures / scenarios.

Feedback: Clearer path. As the slide and ropes at the entrances confuses the journey.

I came up with 2 solutions, one with a broken slide at the front and the other with arches along the path. In the end, I chose the latter as the path leading to the portal is much clearer.

The floating small island creates a sense of fun that you usually find in playgrounds. (a little bit of parkour in the playground looks fun, doesn’t it?)

Asset List

Once my concept art was approved, our tutor mentioned to list all the 3D assets to keep track of needs to be made.

  1. Islands
  2. Slides
  3. Arches
  4. Gates
  5. Swirly ladder
  6. Ropes
  7. Tree
  8. Swing
  9. Portal
  10. Ball pit

Maya Introduction

During the second week, Maya was first introduced. I learned about the shortcuts and saving method that’s recommended. Our or at least my first model created in Maya was a very primitive hammer. It was difficult to follow along the modelling process, but I managed. In this lesson, many tools in Maya was introduced, for example, scales, faces, extrusion, circularise, multi cut tool, and edge loop tool. But I got to say, I need to be more careful while extruding as I extruded more than I should and this created hidden faces.

During our online Friday class, I followed along Michael’s lesson on modelling. I learnt about soft selection which can help modelling uneven surface like a bed or even the island for my diorama.
